I. CLASSIFICATION BY SHAPE
  • Kyungseok Natural scenery stone
  • San-kyungseok Mountain view stones
    • Danbong-sanseok Single peak mountain stone
    • Ssangbong-sanseok Double peak mountain stone
    • Yunsanseok Mountain range stone, three or more mountain peaks representing a mountain range
    • Wonsanseok Distant mountain view, dark in color
    • Keunsanseok Close mountain view, light color compared to wonsanseok
  • Do-kyunseok Island shape stone
  • Hosooseok Lake stone with depression surrounded by large scenery
    • Dhamhyungseok Pond shaped stone with small depressions surrounded with small scenery
    • Ongdalsaem Spring stone, small spring at mountainside
  • Pyunwonseok Plain stone, resembling flat plains with distant mountain or hill
  • Danseok Step stone, two or more flat steps
  • Topaseok Step stone with small plain close to a complex mountain and small plain
  • Pokposeok Waterfall stone resembling mountains or hills with waterfalls, often with white crystal or limestone
  • Bawikyungseok Rock scenery stone, like rocks on a mountain or at ocean
  • Jiphyungseok House or hut shaped stone, rustic type. (Traditional houses blended with nature)
  • Kwantongseok Tunnel stone with one or more tunnels as major viewing points
  • Cheomahyungseok Shelter stone with overhang or shelter
  • Dongkool-hyungseok Cave stone
  • Hyungsangseok Hyungsan means shape of an object, humans and animals
    • Inmoolhyungseok Human object shaped stone
    • Dongmoolhyungseok Animal shaped stone, mythical, extinct or living animals
  • Mooniseok Mooni means design, painting or pattern on the surface
    • Hwamoonseok Flower-pattern stone
    • Moonjaseok Character-pattern stone, with Korean or Chinese characters on the surface
  • Choosangseok Abstract stone, often does not resemble any particular object
  • GoeseokCurious or grotesque, vertical with perforations or creases
II. CLASSIFICATION BY LOCATION
  • Hachunseok (Kaangdol) River stone
  • Haeseok (Badadol) Sea stone, simple shapes, many classified as choosanseok or mooniseok
  • Sanseok Mountain stone, also called sanseok
III. CLASSIFICATION BY MODIFICATIONS
  • Zayunseok Nature or natural condition; the only stones that qualify as suseoks.
  • GagongseokArtificial addition or modification, such as cutting the bottom, or surface grinding
IV. CLASSIFICATION BY SHAPE / ATTRIBUTES
  • Googapseok Turtle-back stone, white inclusions with regular intervals between lines. Rare and cherished for "luck"
  • Golseok (Piadol) Resembling animal bones
  • Baekupzildol Resembles the skin of the oriental pear
  • Youngseok Limestone, originally found on the ground of a mountain valley or on the surface of the seaside.
  • Pibudol Pibu means skin or attractive surface
V. CLASSIFICATION BY EVALUATION
  • Myungseok Masterpiece, giving the viewer a strong feeling
  • Kaseok Beauty or high quality
  • Suseok Classic Korean viewing stone
VI. CLASSIFICATION BY SIZE
  • Sopumseok Small stone, less than 15 cm
  • Pyozunseok Standard stone, between 15 and 45 cm
  • Daepumseok Large stone, over 45 cm
  • Zungwonseok Garden stone, larger than can be carried with both hands
